About this service
The Auckland City Centre Housing First Programme, which began operating in March 2017, is a partnership between Lifewise and Auckland City Mission. Initially, referrals to the Programme will be made through Auckland City Mission and Lifewise as we learn and develop capacity with small numbers. After some months, we will begin to take referrals from our partner organisations.
The programme focuses on providing housing and support to those who have found securing housing the most difficult, those who are chronically homeless.
The group who developed the Housing First Programme for the city centre included people with lived experience of homelessness. Their participation and involvement was crucial to ensure the voice of the rough sleeper community was at the table from the outset.
Many communities internationally are using Housing First very successfully. It is based on a number of key principles:
- Focus on recovery and self-sufficiency; a safe environment is crucial to recovery.
- Maximise people’s choice
- Provide immediate access to housing in the community
- Separate housing and support services
- Focus on reducing harm
- Offer chances for joining social and cultural events
The Auckland City Centre programme is part of Housing First Auckland – a collective of Housing First providers that are working together to end homelessness.
